Welcome and Receive the Savior!
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Jesus would come to us as He came to the disciples long ago? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could hear Him speak to us and enjoy His fellowship? By promising us the gift of His Holy Spirit, Jesus was also promising His constant presence and conversation (John 16:13-15). The question is not whether or not Jesus still comes near and speaks, but whether we are coming to Him and listening.
The nineteenth century Scottish minister, Robert Murray M’Cheyne spoke of Jesus’ regular “trysts” with believers: “Christ is not done with a soul when He has brought it to the forgiveness of sins. It is only then that He begins His regular visits to the soul. In the daily reading of the Word, Christ pays daily visits to sanctify the believer’s soul. In daily prayer, Christ reveals Himself to His own in another way than He does to the world. In the house of God, Christ comes to His own and says, ‘Peace be unto you!’ And in the sacrament, He makes Himself known to them in the breaking of bread, and they cry out, ‘It I the Lord!’ These are all trysting times, when the Savior comes to visit His own.”
You are Christ’s beloved – of course He wants to visit with you regularly! He wants you to know and enjoy these “trysting times” and the comfort and peace of His steadfast presence. Remember that it was to the lukewarm, apathetic Church of Laodicea that He said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone opens, I will come and eat with them, and they with Me.” (Rev. 12:20). The problem has never been a distracted or disinterested Savior, but distracted and disinterested believers.
Believer, our Savior is knocking, He is pleading, He is ever ready to bless you with His presence and His voice. Will you go to Him? Will you crave Him? Will you long for His company as much as He longs for yours?
