Scripture Gives Us Christ
“All Scripture is God-breathed, and is therefore useful for teaching, correcting, rebuking, and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17
There is no shortage of passages in Scripture that will make us wonder, “why on earth is this here?” Yet this is exactly the question we should ask; and, not only of the most confusing or confounding passages, but all of Scripture. Why, in God’s wisdom, both in inspiring the original writers of Scripture and guiding the church in compiling what eventually became the canon (the 66 books of the Bible), is this particular passage here? Why of all the different moments, occurrences, and thoughts that could have been recorded (John 20:30-31), are these the ones God inspired the writers to include?
These are the basic questions of Bible study. What was God doing through the writer when this particular book or letter was originally written, and what is He doing now? What message was, and still is, being conveyed, and how does that message speak to believers then and now? Put differently, how does this passage, chapter, and book give us Christ in all His fullness for our salvation, since Scripture is about Christ (John 5:39-40)?
Go to Scripture with a heart eager to find Christ, and He will give you Himself. From Genesis to Revelation, every page breathes His name.
On the journey with you,
