God Does Not Lie

Treasured Friends,

“He who is the glory of Israel does not lie or change His mind; for He is not a human being, that He should change His mind.”  So go the words of 1 Samuel 15:29.  King Saul has put the final nail in the coffin of his kingship, but this does not mean that God will leave Israel bereft of a king.  Indeed, it would be to Israel’s second king, the runty shepherd boy raised up to follow Saul (1 Sam. 16:7), that God would promise one from his line to come and reign on an everlasting throne (2 Sam. 7:13).

And, in the fullness of time, on a starry night in David’s city, that promised One appeared; not on a gilded throne, or wrapped in royal robes, but in a cattle trough, wrapped in a diaper (Luke 2:1-20).  And now He reigns on high, on heaven’s throne (Eph. 2:6); and from there He pours out His Spirit and abides us in Himself (John 15:1-4), until He comes again with His Kingdom of everlasting peace (Rev. 21:5).

It all can feel so far off amid life’s trials and tribulations (Psalm 6:3), but we need not doubt any of this for even a moment.  God does not lie, and He does not change His mind.  No word from Him will ever fail (Luke 1:37), for He is not the God of broken promises (Numbers 23:19; Hebrews 10:23).  But the One who sent His one and only Son, in whom His every promise finds it “Yes!” and “Amen” (2 Cor. 1:20)!

On the journey with you,

Mike
